Rapper Medikal, real name Samuel Adu Frimpong, has launched what he calls the #Brafie programme, urging Ghanaians living abroad to consider returning home. “Bra fie” is Twi for “come home”.
Medikal made the call on Monday morning, 2 November, in a post on X addressed to his “brothers and sisters abroad”. In it, he pointed to his fellow rapper TeePhlow, who he said had just done exactly that.
Minutes later, Medikal followed up with a second post saying he would be “very vocal” this week and repeating his call to “start the bra fie program now”, suggesting the conversation is only just beginning.
As reported by Adomonline, the rapper cited TeePhlow as an example of someone who had recently returned and urged others overseas to follow suit. GhanaWeb also picked up the story.
The TeePhlow reference is notable. TeePhlow was described as a US-based rapper by Modern Ghana in September 2024, when he spoke about the economic struggles facing young Ghanaians and urged them to look for better opportunities abroad. Medikal has not said what the #Brafie programme will involve beyond his posts, and he has not announced any partners or events linked to it.
The campaign comes during a busy stretch for the rapper. On Saturday he unveiled the cover art for his Spaceship album, which he has promised for November, and he also performed alongside KiDi and King Promise at the Hitz FM-Joy FM Beach Rave.
Calls for Ghanaians in the diaspora to come back and build at home are not new, from the government’s 2019 Year of Return to regular debates about the “brain drain”. With Medikal promising to be “very vocal” on the subject this week, #Brafie looks set to add a hip-hop voice to that conversation.
