Sarkodie has opened up about one of the strangest moments of his career: a fan asking for a selfie while he was still at the scene of a car crash he had just survived with highlife legend Amakye Dede.
The rapper told the story in a video now circulating on social media, GhanaWeb reports. According to Sarkodie, the pair were travelling from Kumasi to Amakye Dede’s home in Agogo when their vehicle was involved in a head-on collision and ran off the road into a nearby bush. The crash made headlines in April 2018.
He explained that they had been moving in a convoy, but the other cars had fallen some distance behind. That left just four people in the damaged vehicle: Amakye Dede in the front passenger seat, and Sarkodie in the back with the driver and his cameraman.
As passers-by and other drivers stopped to look, one woman’s reaction stayed with him. “People saw the accident, but they didn’t know it was us. One girl came down from the bus and said to me, ‘Where else will I meet you again? Let me take a selfie with you.’ She didn’t ask how I was doing,” he recalled.
For Sarkodie, the moment summed up how fame can hide the person behind the name. “That’s why I am saying they don’t see a human; they see Sarkodie. She had not even realised that I was hurt; that is not what was important to her,” he said, as quoted by Adom Online.
His account raises a familiar question about celebrity in Ghana and beyond: where the line sits between excitement at meeting a star and basic concern for someone who has just been through a frightening ordeal. In this case, Sarkodie suggests, the woman did not stop to consider that he might be injured at all.
The story comes during a busy stretch for the rapper. He recently headlined Rapperholic Kumasi ’26 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, and has been rolling out singles from his upcoming DeJaVu EP, including ‘Deja Vu’ with KiDi and ‘Cold’ with Olivetheboy.
