Mr Eazi says Ghana “will always feel like home”, and he is preparing to take his Detty Rave festival indoors and across more than one day this December. The singer and entrepreneur made the remarks in a cover interview with Guardian Life, published on Saturday, 7 November, by The Guardian Nigeria.
“This year, we want to do more than one day. It’s going to be in an indoor venue,” Mr Eazi told the publication, adding that he was going to Accra “in a few days to finalise everything”. He promised that the production would be “even crazier”, and said the event would help show investors the kind of indoor venues he wants to build. He did not name the venue or the dates in the interview.
Those venue ambitions have been a longer project. Mr Eazi told Guardian Life that plans for a major entertainment venue in Ghana had not yet been finalised, citing bureaucracy: “We were so close to finalising the deal, and then the ministers changed.” He said he would like to build 2,000-capacity and 750-capacity venues, describing a flexible, “rustic” production space that could host anything from raves to fashion shows.
The Nigerian-born star also spoke warmly about his ties to Ghana, where he studied at KNUST and first stepped into a recording studio. “First, I still live in Ghana. I still have my home in Ghana,” he said, recalling that the first producer he worked with was Ghanaian and that some people assume he is Ghanaian. He also retold how eating banku at a bus-stop spot in Adenta around 2011 inspired the slow, relaxed delivery behind his signature Banku sound.
The interview comes a month after Mr Eazi released “Comfort” with Ghanaian-American singer MOLIY. As reported by MyJoyOnline, the Ragee-produced single arrived on 2 October and revisits the Banku sound that launched his career.
His comments add to a busy week of media rounds. GhanaWeb reported that in an interview on 3Music, he revealed that his biggest pay cheque did not come from his own music. “The most money I’ve ever been paid as an artiste, I didn’t get paid as Mr Eazi. I got paid as the MC in the South of France,” he said.
