Highlife star Bisa Kdei says talent alone will not keep a music career alive. Speaking on Atinka FM on Monday, 3 November, he urged emerging artistes to surround themselves with honest, business-minded people and to plan for life beyond the spotlight, as reported by Pulse Ghana and GhanaWeb.
“Talent is not enough. You need to be smart and surround yourself with the right people. You need business-minded individuals who can correct you when you go wrong,” he said on the station.
He argued that a small, reliable team beats a large circle of yes-people. “You don’t need a large team; one or two solid people who believe in you and are honest with you are better than a crowd of people who cannot tell you the truth,” Bisa Kdei said, according to both outlets.
The musician also pressed artistes to build other income streams while their fame lasts, warning that popularity and music earnings do not last forever. “Beyond the fame, what will you eat when the fame is gone? You need to be business-minded. That is why I always say you should have a side hustle. When you spend money, you must plan,” he said.
Drawing on his own early struggles, he cautioned against spending just to impress others and said personal goals should guide financial decisions, not public expectations. “I have experienced hunger, and I know what I went through to get to where I am today. So why should I spend my time worrying about impressing someone? I don’t care about doing things just to please people,” he added. The comments land as a practical warning for a generation chasing viral moments without a long-term plan, and they echo a wider industry debate about how Ghanaian artistes manage money once the hits slow down.
