Comedy pioneers KSM, Fritz Baffour and Tommy Annan-Forson are returning to the stage this Saturday. Award-winning comedian Lekzy Decomic is bringing them together with a new generation of stand-ups for Lekzy Unleashed: The Godfathers Edition, at the UPSA Auditorium in Accra on Saturday, 7 November, as reported by the Ghana News Agency and Graphic Online.
The show starts at 7 pm. Regular tickets are GH¢150, with VIP at GH¢500 and Premium at GH¢800, according to the official flyer. Tickets can be bought by dialling *714*800#. The night also features South African comedian Chris Mapane and Nigerian comedian Deacon Famous, while rapper Okyeame Kwame and the Kyemkyem Band are billed to provide the music.
Appearing on GTV’s Breakfast Show on Thursday, Lekzy said the idea came after he met one of the industry’s pioneers and felt younger audiences had not seen him at his best. “Why don’t I do a show that will celebrate all these people that I consider as godfathers in the industry? And that is exactly what I’m about to do,” he said, as reported by GBC.
Graphic Online quotes Lekzy saying the night is also a chance to thank the pioneers whose work created the platform for younger comedians. Fritz Baffour and Tommy Annan-Forson began doing stand-up in 1987, when few people believed anyone could make a living from comedy. KSM later showed the commercial power of the craft, selling out the National Theatre for 13 nights.
The contemporary line-up includes Clemento Suarez, DKB, Foster Romanus, Jeneral Ntatia, Kwaku Manu, Khemikal, Mr Beautiful, David Oscar, Parrot Mouth, Percy Obrempong, James Brown and Jeffery Nortey. Lekzy, a multiple Ghana Comedian of the Year winner, has previously staged specials including CanPAIN MESSage, Too Cute to Be Mute and Funny Boy Innit, and told GBC he rebranded the annual show as Lekzy Unleashed so sponsors would instantly recognise the franchise, the way fans know Rapperholic.
