Gospel singer Piesie Esther marked five years of her Flora Made By Grace concert on Sunday night, 1 November, with a packed worship service at Perez Chapel International in Dzorwulu, Accra, which included a surprise appearance by Kuami Eugene and tributes to people the gospel community has lost this year.
Billed on her official website as The Greater Grace Encounter, the fifth edition began at 4pm and was sponsored by Flora. The poster listed Ohemaa Mercy, Kofi Sarpong, Francis Amo, the Tagoe Sisters, Kweku Teye and Uncle Ato alongside the host.
Coverage from 3Xtra, the entertainment arm of TV3, showed Uncle Ato, Kofi Sarpong, the Tagoe Sisters, Emmanuel Juddah and the Breaking Yoke Choir all ministering during the evening, while Ghana Music streamed the concert live. The biggest cheer came when Piesie Esther invited Kuami Eugene to join her on stage, a moment 3Xtra described in a post on X as a “special surprise” for the crowd.
There was a quieter moment too. According to 3Xtra, Piesie Esther paid tribute to veteran gospel singer Bernice Offei and to Javits Frimpong, the 15-year-old Ghanaian who was shot dead in the Bronx last week, and honoured Bernice with a performance of her song “Hold On”.
Bernice Offei, known for “Life Is Short”, “Hold On” and “Kaa She Gbeyei”, died in September at the age of 63, as MyJoyOnline reported. The Ghana News Agency says she will be laid to rest on Saturday, 14 November, after a burial service at the Legon Interdenominational Church.
The audience was full of familiar faces. 3Xtra and DEK360 Ghana both reported that Queen Florence The Lioness was there, and 3Xtra also spotted Akumaa Mama Zimbi, Prophet Roja, 2018 Ghana’s Most Beautiful winner Naomi Abena Obeng and the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam George.
Sunday’s event was the fifth edition of Flora Made By Grace, the concert series Piesie Esther hosts with Flora, and the poster billed it as a celebration of “5 years of Greater Grace”.
