Mr Eazi has revealed that he passed up a chance to meet Jay-Z, the man he calls his “North Star”, because he had already been paid to perform for around 8,000 fans that night.
The singer shared the story in an interview with Waihiga Mwaura on BBC’s Focus on Africa, a clip of which BBC News Africa released in a post on X on Thursday, 29 October.
“In music and entrepreneurship, that would be Jay-Z, my North Star. I haven’t met Jay-Z,” he said. He explained that despite working with Beyoncé on her 2019 project The Lion King: The Gift, his path had never crossed with her husband’s.
The chance came when he was invited to the project’s premiere, which he described as a small dinner. “My team was there. Jay-Z was going to be there,” he recalled. “I had a show. They had already paid me. There was going to be like 8,000 fans coming there to watch me. And I was like, okay, if it’s meant to be, it would happen.”
Elsewhere in the conversation, reported by Pulse Ghana, Mr Eazi said he is now directly or indirectly involved in business activity in about 24 African countries. He also talked about Locker Room Bonus, a scheme that sends bonuses straight to players’ mobile money wallets when their teams win matches in partner leagues.
On his music, he said he is currently focused on “fun, good vibes”, joking that he wants to make songs his niece can dance to on TikTok. Asked what his wife, Temi Otedola, had introduced him to, he answered: “Myself. Just being more self-aware.”
Although he is Nigerian, Mr Eazi’s story is closely tied to Ghana, where he studied at KNUST in Kumasi and built his early following before going global.
