King Promise says his relationship with Mr Eazi was a friendship long before it was a musical partnership, and that is how it has stayed.
Speaking to Lexis Bill on Joy FM’s Drive Time on Tuesday, 27 October, the Terminator hitmaker said the pair met around 2012, before either of them had a hit song. As reported by MyJoyOnline, King Promise was still in school at the time, while Mr Eazi was working on his first mixtape, About to Blow, which came before his breakthrough.
“For us, it’s always been more of a friendship even than music,” King Promise said. He explained that they rarely made songs together in those early years, but when they finally did, the records travelled. “We barely made songs till we made songs. And then whenever we made them, they went far,” he said.
According to Adomonline, the singer said he prefers friendships that do not depend on what each person can offer the other professionally, pointing to his relationships with R2Bees and Sarkodie as similar examples. He had known them for years before they worked together. “I try to keep genuine friendships where it’s not because you need me and I need you,” he said.
King Promise also credited the Nigerian star with shaping his outlook. “The influence he’s had on me is that he keeps it a thousand percent. He’s very real and straightforward, direct to the point. If he says yes, it’s yes and if he says no, he says no,” he said.
He recalled watching Mr Eazi’s career take off while they swapped ideas in the studio. “I was still coming when he was already flying. And that alone was a lot for me, like my guy is smashing it,” he said.
Their conversations go beyond music too. King Promise described Mr Eazi as a businessman first, saying he worked as a promoter and booked artistes before he started making music and later set up a record label. The two sometimes talk about investments, including stocks. “It was business that even got him into music,” he said, calling his friend a “forward thinker”.
Mr Eazi has also been in the news this week after urging Shatta Wale to link up and finish their joint album.
