Nigeria’s young sensation, Wizkid beat several top African artists to win the 16th MOBO Awards for Best African Act at a ceremony at the SECC in Glasgow, Wednesday night. Tinie Tempah, Adele, Dappy and Tinchy Stryder were amongst those honoured at the ceremony, whilst Jessie J walked away with a staggering four gongs.
The event which was hosted by Jason Derulo and Alesha Dixon also saw Rihanna pipping the likes of Beyoncé and Bruno Mars to the post by grabbing the Best International Act Award.
Power duets were the order of the evening with Professor Green and Emeli Sandé performing together as did Dubstep/Grime girls Katy B and Ms Dynamite. To cap it all, Dappy and Tinchy Stryder wowed the audience with their elaborate stage performance of hit single ‘Spaceship’, for which they picked up the Best Video award. London rapper Wretch 32, Glaswegian Yasmin, co-host Jason Derulo and US teen sensation Alexis Jordan also gave great performances.
Joining the top-level talent performing on the night was Dionne Bromfield, the Goddaughter of the late Amy Winehouse, who belted out a thoroughly moving rendition of Amy’s ‘Love Is A Losing Game’, in a fitting tribute including a video montage of the late MOBO Award-winning singer.
